BEHIND THE CALCULATION
Understand your result.
Review income against expenses and model one year of investing part of your monthly surplus.
How the calculation works
Monthly surplus = income − expenses. An optional monthly investment is capped at the positive surplus. The investment scenario uses 12 end-of-month deposits and the monthly equivalent of an effective annual return. An optional illustrative tax is deducted from positive gains only.
Income of 4,000 and expenses of 3,000 leave a monthly surplus of 1,000. Investing 500 at each month-end contributes 6,000 over one year. At 0% return, the ending balance is 6,000 and the gain is zero.
Assumptions & limitations
- Income and expenses are monthly values in the same currency.
- Income is the amount available after any deductions you choose to include.
- The one-year investment scenario begins with no initial balance and reinvests returns.
- A tax percentage is a simplified scenario input, not a statement of your tax liability.
- A monthly surplus does not itself mean financial independence or passive income.
